Horse Musings

I know a little bit about horses. I rode my first horse when I was two, got my first pony when I was three, broke a horse for the first time when I was five. At nine I apprenticed to a horse trainer and worked with her until I was fifteen. Through middle school I home schooled at night and worked at the barn full time. I’ve managed three barns, and worked with just about every age, sex, and breed of horse that exists. I can drive, ride western for pleasure or reining, ride english for pleasure or jumping up to 5′ courses, and I’ve done dressage through Level 3. Like I said, I know a little bit about horses.

I grew up assuming that I would be a horse trainer for my entire life. At 21 I had to have a major surgery that required nearly a year of rehab. By the time I was back on my feet Gavyn’s developmental issues required my full attention, and I became a stay at home caretaker. I had to make money somehow, so I fell into web design.

All these years later, I may wind up returning to horse training due to an injury that is making typing difficult for me. Funny how things come full circle. Right now I am in a limbo stage, waiting to see what improvements (if any) the doctors predict. We’re getting the property ready for horses in the meantime, and our first new addition should come home next Sunday.

I figure its a win-win proposition. If my arm gets better I’ve got a horse, which is nice. If I find out that the prognosis is bad, I’m set up to start a new (old) career. I’m closing this post with some pics of Jake, my new four year old Tennessee Walker gelding.
