Downsizing

We sold our big screen TV and the accompanying home theater system. Then we moved the piano out of our bedroom (Yes, there was a piano in our bedroom. No, we did not have room for it in there.) and into the spot in the living room previously occupied by the TV.

The living room looks really nice with the piano in it. The room looks “finished”. Before it always looked like the living room of a college senior, waiting for maturity and sophistication. Now it looks nice.

Our bedroom also looks nice, and there is so much room to breathe!

Now that the piano is in an accessible place everyone that is interested in it actually gets to play it. We had a family piano lesson tonight, and I think that has a good chance of becoming a regular household activity.

Tonight we set up my laptop on top of a few cookbooks, which were themselves sitting on a dining room chair perched in the middle of our living room. Then all four of us and both dogs piled onto the couch with all of the requisite blankets and pillows, and watched Star Trek.

Nobody had a problem seeing the screen or hearing the audio. We were warm and cozy without having to turn the heat up. We could have discussion about the show without shouting across the room and drowning out the audio. It wasn’t a bad experience.

There have been very few downsizing decisions that we’ve regretted, but getting rid of the TV was still very scary. In retrospect, I’m pretty sure we did the right thing.
