Staying Warm

One of the things we didn’t anticipate about buying an old house was the difficulty inherent to attempts to heat and cool the structure. This building has no insulation, and is far from air tight.

This winter we made a decision to set the thermostat at 65 degrees and just live with it. Before we moved here all four of us had gotten used to running around the house in our shorts and tank tops even when it was freezing outside. That doesn’t work anymore.

Lessons we have learned:

1. Socks, hats, and sweat pants are your friend.

2. The more blankets, the better.

3. Dogs are warm, maintain contact.

4. Using the oven warms the house up.

5. Its worth splurging on an electric heater for the bathroom.

6. It is warmer if everyone hangs out in one room.

These haven’t been hard changes to make, and I’m finding that we’re spending more time together as a result. This move has altered our lifestyle so much. I don’t think any of us were aware of the drastic changes that lay in store for us. It hasn’t always been easy, but in the end I think we’re all happier here.
