Raw Diet For the Dogs

We switched the dogs over to a raw diet this week. We go through about ten pounds of chicken necks and backs in a week. For five days we feed the chicken. Oscar gets a pound and the other two dogs get a half pound each. They each get a whole raw egg daily as a snack, too.  Over the weekend they get the same proportions of a vegetable mash comprised of pumpkin, spinach, and liver.

The difference in the dog’s condition is amazing. Twila was a reeking nasty pile of bones last week. She is still skinny but she has absolutely no odor and her coat feels like silk. Chance was experiencing progressively worsening skin problems, trouble maintaining weight, and was the only dog in the house plagued by fleas. He is shiny, odor free, his skin has healed up and he has no more fleas. Oscar is the same healthy ox he has always been, but he is odorless.

This one week experiment ran us ten dollars. Even if we kept things up at this price point we couldn’t feed a high quality dog food to all three dogs for less. Once we find a wholesale source for the meat we’ll be feeding all three dogs for about twenty dollars a month.

Our raw diet experiment was a resounding success, and I heartily recommend that you give it a try. Remember to wash the bowls in hot soapy water after feeding each day, and sanitize the floors if your dog drags things out of the bowls. You need to watch your dog eat the first few days in order to train it not to drag things off to eat in private. I learned this the hard way after Twila ate a raw egg in my bed. Give them yogurt to help them transition to the new food. I also learned this the hard way after Twila threw up in my bed.

Give this a try and let us know how it works for you!
